Who wrote my story?
Life is filled with stories. Success stories, challenging stories, stories of sorrow and loss and stories that bring joy and happiness. Only last week did I have the privilege of listening to many of my Grandfather’s stories over a nice old cup of English breakfast tea. (This is an experience and hobby that I would highly recommend by the way
#bucketlist). Here I learnt some important lessons and gathered some thoughts on life.
Too often, I believe, we find ourselves trying to write the story of our own life… working so hard to intricately plan out each step of the journey as we go. We look for the experiences we can get ourselves into that will feel great and at the same time look good before others. Instagram and Facebook become the avenues we use and put so much time into to help us create these meaningful stories for ourselves. Many of us will even plan what our images are going to be and what they will say to tell our story the way we want to tell it. So much energy, so much time, so much stress trying to ensure our story means something and plays out how we hope.
But is this how it was supposed to be? Or is there another way? Is there another author who’s already been at work and involved in our story?
Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.Proverbs 16:3, 9
“But the Lord establishes their steps…” What an awesome truth to apply to our lives! We can shift our focus from trying to create a story for ourselves to committing ourselves and our lives to God and allowing Him to establish our steps according to His plans. When we move away from focusing on these things like how we compare to others, how we keep up our status, how we can make things all work out… to instead committing ourselves and our story to Him, He promises to establish our steps. We no longer have to fear or worry about controlling each step of the way when we partner with God and walk things out with Him.
Through Jeremiah 29:11 God says to us, I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.
God has great plans, and promises to establish my steps when I open myself up to walk things out with him rather than on my own.
We’ll be looking at this at Awaken camp – but in the lead up maybe think about the effort you’re going to try and create your own story. Is it worth it? Is there another way?
